Travel tips for Egypt
Top 5 Experiences
The land of the pharaohs surprises its visitors with colossal statues, architectural masterpieces, the picturesque Nile Valley and the wonderful underwater world of the Red Sea. The highlights include:

Cities of pharaohs
The many time-honored cities, shaped by diverse historical epochs, are home to remarkable architectural treasures, including historic buildings, mosques, traditional souks, teahouses, public baths, and much more. In Cairo — Africa’s second-largest metropolis and one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities — visitors encounter the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the renowned Egyptian Museum.

Nile
Stretching over 6,671 kilometers, the Nile is the longest river in the world and is often described as the largest open-air museum on earth. Its surrounding landscape is strikingly diverse, shifting between lush green riverbanks and vast desert scenery. The wildlife along the Nile is equally impressive: during a river cruise, visitors can spot a rich variety of birdlife — including flamingos, Egyptian geese, and pelicans — as well as hippos, particularly in the southern stretches of the river.

Cultural heritage
Owing to its ancient civilizations, Egypt is home to an extraordinary number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Along the Nile, visitors can marvel at the monumental temple complex of Ramses II at Abu Simbel or explore one of the oldest monasteries in Christendom. Remarkably preserved ancient cities such as Thebes and Abu Mena, together with the necropolis of the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, invite travelers to step back into the world of antiquity.

Sahara
The world’s largest hot desert covers much of Egypt, shaping a landscape of sweeping sand dunes, vast stone plateaus, rugged mountains, and dramatic valleys. Sunrise and sunset in the Sahara and the Eastern Desert create breathtaking displays of color that are not to be missed. On the Sinai Peninsula, visitors can still encounter Bedouin communities and experience elements of their traditional way of life.

Red Sea
The Red Sea is a true paradise for nature lovers, renowned for its pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs. Home to more than 1,200 species of fish and over 250 types of coral — as well as starfish, dolphins, and countless other marine creatures — its underwater world ranks among the most spectacular on the planet. Along the coast, a variety of seaside resorts, port towns, and traditional fishing villages invite visitors to unwind and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.
Tourist infrastructure
Egypt has a well-developed flight network, which handles both domestic and international flights with numerous international and national airports.
The infrastructure of the North African country has been significantly expanded in recent years. Cairo is the hub of the entire rail, road and air transport network and has the only fully developed subway network in Africa. Buses and taxis are the main modes of transport in the small and large cities of the country.
The choice of accommodation in Egypt is huge, especially in the big cities and around the Red Sea! It ranges from renowned resorts and boutique hotels to North African riads to ship cabins for river cruises. Some accommodations seem to derive from a dream from 1001 nights.
Climate and travel season
With its mainly mild climate, Egypt is a year-round travel destination. Even in winter the temperatures reach an average of 22°C, but it can cool down to 5 °C at night. The climate varies depending on the region – at the coast or around the Nile Delta there is a Mediterranean climate, while in Cairo, Central and Upper Egypt, the temperatures are desert-like. In the summer months it can get very hot and dry with temperatures around 35 °C. The best travel time for the whole country is from mid-March to mid-May and from mid-September to mid-November.
Visa and entry
To enter Egypt, Germans, Austrians and Swiss need a passport which must be valid for at least 6 months after the trip. In addition, a visa is required. This can be applied for as an e-visa at the embassy or online on the Visa2Egypt platform. An e-Visa costs € 34.95. It is also possible to obtain the visa „on arrival“ upon entry. The latter is issued directly at the airport counter and costs 25 USD (approx. € 21.50), but requires waiting times.
Since the regulations can change at any time, all information are non-binding and without guarantee. Please observe the visa regulations and the current information of the Federal Foreign Office / Federal Ministry European and International Affairs / Federal Department of Foreign Affaires at all times.
